Organizations of Vancia

The Circle of Seven

The Brotherhood of Akmenos

The Brotherhood studies the nature of life, death, the body, and the soul. They are known to conduct strange experiments, to collect corpses, and to utilize simple undead labor. They are also known to despise religious organizations, particularly, the Church of Taiia. And the feeling is apparently mutual. The Brotherhood is not completely reviled, though. In fact, their devotion to healing and the treatment of disease and injury through magic, alchemy, and mundane medicine has made them popular among those who cannot afford or will not accept divine magical healing. Still, many are nervous about seeking their help until desperation leaves them no choice.

The Kinship of the Makers

The Makers study transmutation, the elements, artifice, and the creation of magical items. They are magical craftsman and artists, specializing in metalwork and stonework. Esri Fahmia, Archwizard of the Coral Tower, was a Maker until she renounced her membership and founded the Coral Tower and laid down the Charter of the City of Vancia.

The Legion of the Golden Chimera

The Legion is an academy of warmages and mage knights. They provide training for mercenaries, soldiers, and officers. However, they resent the fact that Esri Fahmia established her own City Watch to protect Vancia and enforce justice and feel that they should have been entrusted with that duty and the Watch’s resources and authority. It is no secret that they would like to see the City Watch disbanded and absorb their duties. But they will need to prove to the Circle of Seven and the Guild Council that the Watch is ineffective.

The Vancian College of Wizardry

The College of Wizardry is an egalitarian organization dedicated to sharing the secrets of magic with anyone who has the talent to use it. While tuition can be prohibitively expensive for the poorest of potential students, the college offers scholarships to those with exceptionally high magical protential. Of course, wealthier families with magical gifts prefer their children to study with more reputable organizations or private tutors, so the school does not enjoy a high reputation. But former alumni of high magical skill often join the staff and few doubt that there is a great deal of magical power behind the ivy covered walls of the college.

The High Seekers of the Labyrinth of Kardoss (The Revelers)

Most know the seekers by the nickname “the Revelers” because no one knows what their name means and they seem to be mainly concerned with seeking pleasure and spectacle. They operate The Field of Flame and Blood, a grand arena where spectacular battles are hosted, and the Carnival of Horrors, which, despite its grand name is little more than an ongoing magical circus with a slightly creepy vibe and a penchant for debauchery. They also host frequent parades, festival, and parties and they seem to be devoted only to overindulge and gorge themselves on life’s pleasures, no matter how base or depraved.

The Spiral Tower

Of all of the members of the Circle of Seven, the Spiral Tower is the most mysterious. Even their proper name is something they conceal. It is known that the order has quite a few high elves among its members, along with humans and gray elves, which makes it quite unusual as the high elves are normally quite private about their magical traditions. Despite the mystery surrounding their membership and their mission, they are respected as wise, fair-minded and objective. They are skilled at seeing through to the heart of problems and conflicts and make excellent diplomats and advisors. They seem to be viewed as a stabilizing force on the Circle of Seven. But there are those who distrust their apparent lack of agenda.

Other Political and Government Organizations

The Mercantile Guilds

Vancia is governed by two primary bodies, the Circle of Seven, consisting of a representative from each of the seven major magical guilds, and the Circle of Guilds, consisting of a representative from each recognized guild or organization within the city. Merchant and trade guilds make up the vast majority of this Circle (hence the name). While technically, the Mercantile Guilds are a collection of separate organizations and they do not agree on everything, in general, they all work to support the interests of the business, merchant, and middle-class community in Vancia. Thus, to outsider, they tend to work as one unit.

  • Colors and Symbols: Each guild has its own symbol that member shops and businesses can display.

  • Most Shops and Businesses (Locations) in Vancia are members of one of the Mercantile Guilds

The Vancian City Watch

The Vancian City Watch was founded by Esri Fahima to protect Vancia and enforce its laws. They have several different subdivisions, including a standing army that defends the city’s walls, sea, and sky; the watch patrol that enforces the laws; and the inspectors who investigate crimes. Their mandate is to enforce the laws of the city and the Commander of the Watch even has the power to act against members of the Circle of Seven to protect the city. The Commander of the Watch is appointed by the Circle of Seven, but must be approved by The Archwizard of the Coral Tower (Ezri Fahima). Thus, with the death of Colviarin Firstleaf and the disappearance of Esri Fahima, the City Watch has only an acting Commander with no authority over the Circle of Seven, and it does not appear that will change anytime soon.

  • Colors and Symbols: Crimson and black, three moons and three stars arranged in a circle (also the symbol of Vancia itself)
  • Inspector Andriella Firstleaf (Known Member): daughter of Colviarin Firstleaf, who works out of the Dragon’s Gate Garrison. She is supposedly an ally of the Redcloaks and passes information to Valiaran Whiteflower
  • The Dragon’s Gate Garrison (Location): the garrison of the City Watch located closest to Minstrel’s Row in the New City.

Religious Organizations

The Church of Saint Dialen the Peacemaker

A church of Taiia, The Flame of Salvation, located in a residential neighborhood near Minstrel’s Row in the New City with a large population of City Goblins and Urogs. Saint Dialen was a missionary who worked against the unofficial (but pervasive) Taiian ‘human’s only’ sentiment and traveled to seek converts among any and all sentient races who would listen. He espoused the view that Taiia intended to offer salvation to anyone who was willing to walk her path, regardless of race. Sadly, he was killed by hobgoblins during one of his later missions who believed he was undermining their way of life.

  • Colors and Symbols: White and yellow (gold) and the Three-Eyed Mask of Taiia.
  • Contacts: None
  • The Church of Saint Dialen the Peacemaker (Location), a church in Vancia in a residential neighborhood off Minstrel’s Row in the New City.

The Temples of the Caelwyn Gods

Although the worshippers of the Caelwyn are a loose-knit bunch, barely unified in any sense of the word, the priests, templars, and other devotees in Vancia tend to work together to provide for the spiritual needs of the city. Thus all temples and shrines in the city can be considered to be loosely a part of one organization. Of course, the individual level of cooperation and unity between the various temples varies depending on the people involved and the gods they follow.

  • Colors and Symbols: Each god has its own colors and symbols.
  • Tevan Bashere (Acquaintance), Keeper of a Shrine to Maedwyn on Minstrel’s Row and a friend of Larialla Ivyleaf.
  • Maedwyn’s Shrine on Minstrel’s Row (Location) is one of numerous small, public shrines and places for worship and ceremonies sprinkled throughout the city. This shrine is located on Minstrels’ Row near Ivy’s Tavern.

Independent Secular Organizations

The Redcloaks

Originally, the Redcloaks began as a charitable network of those with the means to help the poor and less fortunate in the New City of Vancia. They grew into self-appointed vigilante champions. They are well-liked in the neighborhoods where they have sway, but as the city of Vancia continues to teeter on the brink of chaos, some of their members have become more and more open in their opposition to the current power structure. They have had several run-ins with the City Watch and some of them have begun to quietly profess a need for revolution.

There are signs that the organization is fracturing between the moderate protectors of the weak and the more extreme revolutionaries.

  • Colors and Symbols: Those wishing to openly advertise their membership wear a bright red cloak. Some prefer reversible cloaks that show the organization’s colors or conceal them.
  • Larialla “Ivy” Ivyleaf (Friend), landlady of Ivy’s Tavern, a somber but kind-hearted gray elf who extends help to anyone in need and acts as an intermediary for the Redcloaks. Her membership status in the organization is unknown, but she is obviously sympathetic to their cause. She has also demonstrated magical skill as a bard and most recently revealed herself to be an ordained cleric of Maedwyn, the god of music, art, passion, creativity, and love who first taught the civilized races bardic magic.
  • Valiaran Whiteflower (Contact) appears to be a high ranking and well-informed member of the Redcloaks. He is not particularly extreme and seems to be devoted to protecting the innocent from harm, but he has been very vocal about his distrust of anyone in power. Larialla Ivyleaf knows how to reach him.
  • Cambyon (Contact) is a skilled explorer and adventurer who has made a life for himself exploring the Undercity, taking on odd jobs, and evading the Delvers. He is friendly, skilled, and practical. When not exploring, he can usually be found at Ivy’s Tavern.
  • Ivy’s Tavern (Location) is a large, comfortable, and welcoming tavern at the heart if Minstrel’s Row. It is frequently busy, often filled with musicians, actors, performers, and other art types who are frequently between jobs. Other locals will occasionally wander in as there is always an entertaining performance to enjoy. It also appears to act as a central contact point for members of the Redcloaks.

The Delvers

The Delvers are a small coalition of adventurers who explore the Undercity of Vancia, the strange catacombs and ruins that spread beneath the city proper. By most accounts, they are simply a collection of territorial mercenaries and treasure hunters who take a dim view of anyone wandering the Undercity without their knowledge. They have been blamed for more than one disappearance underground and have a cutthroat reputation.
